Grand Island, Neb. — The Grand Island Public Library will host its 23rd-Annual Edith Abbott Victorian Tea Party on Saturday, September 20, from 2-4 p.m. at the Hargis House Women’s Club, which is located at 1109 W. 2nd Street.
This cherished tradition is designed for children ages 6 to 11 and offers a unique opportunity to experience the elegance and history of Victorian-era tea parties in the setting of one of Grand Island’s most historic homes.
The event honors the birthday of Edith Abbott, the library’s namesake, who was born on September 26, 1876. Attendees will learn about Abbott’s legacy, explore the etiquette of Victorian tea parties, sample traditional refreshments and create a themed craft. Historical programs will be presented by the Grand Island Public Library in partnership with the Stuhr Museum, and drawings for prizes will also be held.
Children are encouraged to dress in period attire such as Victorian hats, dresses, gloves or to wear their favorite dress-up clothes. Guests are welcome to bring along a favorite doll, teddy bear or stuffed animal to share in the celebration as well.
Each child must be accompanied by an adult, with up to three children per adult permitted. Space at the Hargis House is limited, and advance registration is required. Registration will remain open until capacity is reached or until Friday, September 19. Participants may register online at www.gilibrary.org, by phone at (308) 385-5333 or in person at any library service desk.
